Living Room: Stage Director's Guide to 2024

Meet Living Room Stage Director's Sara Spicer and Mike 'Hoola' Paine

We are filled with immense gratitude and amazement as we celebrate 20 years of producing the Living Room Stage at Shambhala Music Festival’s 25th annual event.

This milestone is a testament to the dedication, creativity, and passion of everyone who has been a part of this incredible adventure. Our journey programming music and dedicating our love to this venue began in 2002 with the intention of providing festival patrons a chill-out space that naturally encourages all to slow down the pace for a much-needed nurturing reset. The setting of this environment is beautiful in its natural state, offering opportunities to relax amongst ancient old-growth cedar trees, find quiet pockets of space to unwind, enjoy beach time sunshine and cool off in the pristine glacier-fed Salmo River.

We’ve come a long way from our humble beginnings. The evolution of the living room, with its integration of cutting-edge technology and innovative design, promises to astonish with unprecedented enjoyment and experiences that surpass our wildest imaginations while still providing a space to chill out and unwind as originally intended.

This year, we have all kinds of fun and distinct offerings and additions—not only to the music program but also to the stage in the form of installations and activities that invite your participation. We have specifically curated our 2024 lineup to bring back a handful of headlining acts who continue to live and breathe their art in today’s industry and have a history as contributors in the early days of living room curations. We are thrilled to offer a ‘throwback’ of sorts for this year’s lineup while also welcoming several new acts for their debut performances at SMF.

Keep reading to get a snippet of what’s happening on our day and night music format:

Thursday Offerings

We are kicking it off with a family-style lineup featuring a selection of our Living Room favorites who have played a role in shaping the Kootenay scene, along with featured producers making their debut at the festival. Be sure not to miss Soohan’s evening set; he’s making his return and will no doubt deliver another legendary performance. Also, don’t miss our featured headliner Tone Ranger’s live set; he’s making his highly anticipated debut at the festival. In true Living Room throwback fashion, we are delighted to host the return of FUNGINEERS for a late-night psychedelic hip-hop puppet show guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Friday Offerings

Bass on the Beach will be in full effect with all sorts of stylings, hosting notable Living Room alumni such as Edit and Ooah performing solo, as well as making their first official headlining set as The Glitch Mob. Fun fact: 17 years ago, they literally formed their name at the Living Room. The rest is history. Tune into our socials for more details on these origin stories. Be sure not to miss Danni G on our daytime format, as well as debut sets by Honeydrip, Vhoor, Amp Live & Mary Droppinz.

Saturday Offerings

Dive into diverse blends of worldly house & techno à la beach party vibes by day, shifting into richly layered tapestries of sonic-textured deep baselines by sunset. We are honoured to have Tipper back in the room, offering a meticulously customized sundown set that will surely evoke a wide range of emotions and atmospheres. Take note: This will officially be his last set at the beach pre-retirement!

Our ‘Saturday Night Live’ format offers something unique among all the other happenings on site. Prepare to get in the pocket and be captivated by LION BABE’s fierce stage presence and fusion of sounds combining neo-soul, R&B, funk, and electronic grooves that will ignite the dance floor and leave you wanting more.

Sunday Offerings

Rebalance your mind, body, and soul in an immersive sound bath experience with LIGHTCODE by LSDREAM, perfectly timed to replenish our energy stores for the final segment of the rave. Afternoon beach party jams will be in full effect, hosting a cast of multi-genre selectors who know how to throw it down and please the crowd. Sundown with Murge will be magical, rolling into Mat the Alien’s highly anticipated welcome-back set into the room after a long hiatus. Honeycomb’s SMF debut will be hype and a perfect lead-in to Z-trip. Get ready for an unforgettable experience at peak time with Wajatta, featuring the one and only Reggie Watts and OG producer John Tejada making their Shambhala debut. It’s kind of a no-brainer to be in the room for this one! Join in the fun as they bring their unique blend of comedy, soulful techno, and dance music to life, creating a sonic journey you won’t forget. Late-night set with the return of the globally renowned house DJ Sabo, who notably has been one of our favourites and still holds the record for the longest set in Living Room history. Stick around as we roll into our Monday morning wind-down sunrise shenanigans. Shiny Things’ first appearance at the beach will be one to remember.

Tune into our socials to get all the details on how to participate in the #WeLoveLamp2024 contest for a chance to be a part of the show and win a 2025 SMF ticket along with all kinds of other fun prizes.

Also, stay tuned for incoming artist spotlights.

We are looking forward to creating Magic in the living room with all y’all. See you on the dance floor fam. 🛋️🏖️
