Machinedrum is the long-running project of North Carolina–born producer and composer Travis Stewart, widely regarded as one of the most versatile and forward-thinking figures in electronic music. Across more than two decades, Stewart has built a catalog that moves fluently between drum and bass, hip-hop, jazz, R&B, footwork, and experimental club music, unified by a precise rhythmic sensibility and meticulous sound design. His solo albums Vapor City, Human Energy, and A View of U are widely considered modern touchstones, earning praise from Pitchfork, Resident Advisor, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Rolling Stone, and more, while his production and collaboration credits span artists such as Freddie Gibbs, Tinashe, Dawn Richard, Azealia Banks, DJ Rashad, and Sub Focus. His recent work reflects both technical depth and personal reflection. The album 3FOR82 expands on themes introduced on 2023’s 4#TRAX EP, functioning as a love letter to his younger self, the #TRAX IRC community, and the demoscene where he first learned electronic music-making. Built using custom sound banks created in Impulse Tracker via a DOS emulator, the record carries a raw, tactile character shaped by sharp tempo shifts and intricate beat construction. Its companion release 3RMX82 features reinterpretations of the material by a curated group of producers, extending the album’s ideas into new club contexts. Alongside Machinedrum, Stewart is also one quarter of VIER, a collaborative project representing his most recent body of work and exploring darker, more physical club territory. He is further known for projects such as J-E-T-S with Jimmy Edgar, Sepalcure with Praveen Sharma, and Dream Continuum with Om Unit, as well as scoring for film and television. As a DJ, Machinedrum is celebrated for seamlessly connecting disparate tempos and styles into cohesive, high-impact sets, with appearances at major festivals and venues worldwide including Coachella, Glastonbury, Sonar, Dekmantel, Primavera, and Electric Forest.
