Josh Wink

Country: US

When you’re as iconic a figure as Josh Wink, it’s not easy to sum up a career in just a few words—but there are a couple of terms that help capture the essence of the influential electronic music producer’s body of work. One of the most fitting, certainly, would be longevity. A quick look at Wink’s impressive résumé shows: starting out in the early ’80s as a teenage mobile DJ; playing a major role in building Philadelphia’s warehouse scene during the house music explosion later that decade; creating international underground and chart-topping club hits like “Don’t Laugh,” “Higher State of Consciousness,” and “I’m Ready”; founding Ovum Recordings, one of the most respected labels in dance music; and, after more than thirty years, remaining one of electronic music’s most vital, innovative, and forward-thinking artists. Wink’s dedication to innovation remains as strong today as ever. In recent years, he’s released a series of acclaimed singles and remixes including “Shoelaces,” “Balls,” “Autonomic Journeys,” and “Let Go.” His music continues to be embraced and supported by a new generation of artists such as John Summit, Dom Dolla, Mochakk, Peggy Gou, Charlotte De Witte, Eli Brown, and many more—testament to the timelessness and continued relevance of his sound. His “30 Years of Higher State of Consciousness” celebration and the ongoing “607 Sessions” have reintroduced his pioneering sound to a new generation, reaffirming his influence on modern techno and house. Wink has also expanded into curation with his Apple Music “Found Sounds” mix series—an exploration of ambient, deep, and experimental music that showcases another layer of his creative range. Another word that captures Wink’s career is versatility. From the acid breakbeat innovation of “Higher State of Consciousness” to the organ-driven groove of “Stay Out All Night,” from the pulsating ambience of “Horizontal Dancing” to the cult techno of “Meditation Will Manifest” (reissued by R&S two decades after its debut), and through anthemic releases such as “Talking to You,” “Denial,” “Resist,” and “Shoelaces”—his output has consistently pushed boundaries while remaining authentic. “For me, ‘Resist’ was a way to bring awareness to people about their rights, their voice, their beliefs, their thoughts. They matter,” Wink says. Drawing inspiration from a variety of genres, Wink has always resisted easy categorization. As a regular participant in West Philly DJ battles during his teens, his productions incorporate elements of techno, house, ambient, hip-hop, and drum & bass, creating a unique blend of styles. His remix credits spanning over 25 years include Radiohead, Moby, Sting, Depeche Mode, Radio Slave, and Dave Clarke, among others. Ovum Recordings, now in its third decade, continues to thrive as a global tastemaker label. With early releases from Loco Dice, KINK, and Davide Squillace, along with essential records by D’Julz, Harry Romero, Chymera, Steve Bug, Levon Vincent, and Technasia, Ovum remains a platform for timeless music rather than fleeting trends. Which brings us to a final, defining word: integrity. It’s a trait that Wink possesses in abundance—one that has carried him through the cycles and shifts of dance culture. While others have chased trends, Wink has continued to follow his intuition and passion. “I got into this because it was something that I lived and ate and breathed,” he says. “There was so much passion for the music—there was nothing else for me.” Thirty years later, Josh Wink still stands as an unwavering artist at the crossroads of history and innovation—his sound as relevant, unpredictable, and inspired as ever.
