If you’re a SMF veteran, then you’ve probably come across the Theme Camp Electric Mexico
Electric Mexico is a playground for big kids, featuring trampolines, a geodesic dome chill zone, lasers and bubble machines, so it’s no surprise that they are one of the most popular theme camps at the festival.
Last year Electric Mexico attracted over 100 campers, and hundreds of visitors. This year marks their 6th year as part of our Farmily, and now they’re gearing up for a massive few days for the 21st Annual Shambhala Music Festival.
Shambhala Music Festival was lucky enough to catch up with Zach, one of the founders of Electric Mexico, and hear all about the history of the camp and what we can expect at the 21st Annual Shambhala Music Festival.
Can you tell us a little bit about how Electric Mexico was formed?
In 2012 a group of six friends who were active in the electronic music scene here in Calgary had planned to attend Shambhala Music Festival. One of the six had attended the year prior and explained how some of the bigger camps were set up. This was super intriguing and the six decided that they needed to create an amazing camp that everyone would love to visit or be apart of. They brainstormed on names and knew they wanted one that represented a place that was inviting and visually appealing, “Electric”. As well as fun and somewhere that you wanted to come back to year after year, “Mexico”, and so Electric Mexico or Emex for short was started.
Why do you keep returning to Shambhala Music Festival?
There are so many things I could fill in for this answer such as the music, the environment, the stages, or the people. None of those things would be wrong but when it really comes down to it, for many of our members Shambhala Music Festival is home. When we are all there together, we are farmily. We are so blessed to have been able to grow over the years as much as we have. Last year which was our 5th year as the camp, we had just under 100 wonderful people camp with us. We had members come from places as far as New Zealand! For this one week, no matter where we live now, or how much we see each other the rest of the year, when we are together on that beautiful farm, we are this big crazy family. We dance together, we eat together, we even brush our teeth together. We get to spend quality time with quality people in a magnificent location surrounded by what makes us happy. How could you not return?
What attractions do you have at Electric Mexico?
At the camp we have two trampolines, a geodesic dome chill zone topped with a colourful parachute and filled with colourful lights, and a small stage setup with some fun things like lasers and a bubble machine. We also host a few special events every year such as a full scale nerf gun fight or having SMF headliners playing the stage.
What’s on the cards for Electric Mexico in the future?
We are working on some new fun events to host this year at Shambhala Music Festival that we will release info on closer to the festival. This year on top of attending our favourite festivals, we are trying to spread our wings a bit in bringing our to camp to some festivals that we have never had a presence at. Recently we started a basic apparel line and have quite a few designs in the works that will release this summer. We are also working to be more involved in our local electronic scene such as hosting or sponsoring events. One of our big goals is being able to host a large scale Electric Mexico themed stage at a local event or even at a festival.
Is there anything else you’d like the SMF attendees to know about Electric Mexico?
