Wildfire Update: Shambhala Music Festival on Evacuation Alert

Posted by
|

As of Saturday, August 12th 2017, 8:00 AM PST an evacuation order has been issued for the Nelway area. This evacuation order area does NOT currently include Shambhala Music Festival, however the McCormick Creek Fire Evacuation Alert area has been expanded to include the Salmo River Ranch as advised by BC Wildfire.

An evacuation alert is only a notification of risk in the area and NOT an order. An evacuation order may follow an alert, but oftentimes an area may remain on alert for extended period of time.

What you can do:

  1. Communicate with your friends about a potential early departure
  2. Ensure you have a well-rested designated driver
  3. Keep calm and stay informed.

As of the afternoon of August 11th, 2017, BC Wildfire Service currently had 37 personnel fighting the McCormick Creek fire. with the aid of four helicopters, airtankers, skimmers and heavy equipment.

As a precautionary measure, Shambhala is installing a temporary footbridge over the Salmo River as a precaution. A footbridge offers a second means of egress in the event that conditions change.

Please be advised that access to Metalline / Nelway border has been closed until further notice. For our U.S. attendees, please plan an alternate route home. Kootenay Pass remains open.

Suggested alternate routes:

1. Eastport/Kingsgate (Open 24 hrs)
